SKY's ICON OF 1992: DAVE GROHL

Sky 1997

So how are you then?
"Fine, I just woke up."

What are you doing at the moment and what can you see?
"I'm having breakfast - coffee, eggs benedict, grapefruit juice and a cigarette, I don't have any fucking matches so I'll have to light it off the stove."

What were you doing in 1987 and what were you wearing?
"I joined a punk rock band called The Scream and was doing my first tour of America in a beat-up van with six other guys. It was amazing. I was 18 and had never been past Chicago. I wasn't too different to now - in 1987 I think I stopped maturing."

What will you be doing in 10 years time?
"I haven't the slightest fucking idea. I'd love to continue to make music without having to tour for two years at a time. So I'd like to score movies. I've only done one, Touch, but it seems like the sort of thing I could do for the rest of my life."

High and low points of the last decade?
"High point - being in Nirvana. Playing Reading festival in 1992 was amazing. That show should've sucked so bad. We hadn't rehearsed in ages, there was all this speculation as to whether we'd play. The hype about us cancelling was so huge that even our friends in other bands were suprised when we turned up. It was a bad time for the band and then we had to step up in front of 40,000 people. And luckily something special happened. We expected it to be the biggest disaster of the year, but it turned out to be one of the greatest things in my life.
Low point - Take a fucking wild guess."

What would Kurt be doing now if he was alive?
"I dunno. You'll have to ask him that."

Were you Blur or Oasis?
"Oasis. the songs were better."

Who out of Friends would you most like to sleep with?
"Ross."

Favourite Spice Girl and why?
"Pat, our guitar player is a huge fan. They are a pop marketing masterpiece. I am indifferent about them all."

What's the story behind the haircut?
"It was too long. It was time for me to become a man. It's the same haircut that I had when I was 15."

Tell us about the Foo Fighters new album.
"It's the first record we've played as a band. I played all the instruments on the first record. When you record by yourself it's very one-dimensional, but when you have a group of people together you can strech the songs."

Are you the only Grohl in the local phone directory?
"Yes, actually I think were the only Grohls in America with this spelling. On my first tour of America I'd pick up telephone directories to check, and I never found any. It's a little kooky because me and my cousin Brian are the only two people who can carry on the family name. I'm gonna wait for a while and then have a slew of children."

What is your all-time favourite Sky cover?
"I'd love to see Bjork on the cover. I love her, she's amazing. The whole kit and caboodle. An inspiration."

What item could you not have survived the decade without?
"My cigarettes."

What are you doing after this interview?
"Light another cigarette from the stove, then go to practice."
